Position Overview: 


This class provides compliance and enforcement of the Uniform Statewide Building Code and International Property Maintenance Code as adopted by City ordinance. Incumbents provide inspections of buildings and structures, serve as enforcement officers, and perform related administrative and customer service duties.


Responsibilities:

  • Conduct field inspections for code compliance and property violations
  • Manage case files and database entries
  • Perform administrative tasks such as issuing summonses and subpoenas, preparing official documents, and attending meetings
  • Coordinate with property owners, attorneys, architects, and other organizations
  • Conduct research and investigations on property ownership and status
  • Provide documentation and testify in court hearings

Qualifications:


Minimum Training and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Three years of experience in building construction or maintenance, fire, or housing inspections
  • Valid Driver's License with satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
  • Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Property Maintenance Inspector certification
  • Virginia Special Police Officer certification within a timeframe established by the city

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency with construction materials, methods, and techniques
  • Familiarity with maintenance codes, inspection techniques, and enforcement procedures
  • Skills in computer proficiency, research methods, documentation, and customer service
  • Ability to interpret codes, conduct inspections, communicate effectively, and work with diverse populations
