Job Description

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is excited to announce an opportunity for an American Association of Museum Directors (AAMD) Education Intern. VMFA has been chosen as one of only ten sites in the United States for this prestigious internship. The selected candidate will work closely with VMFA’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) staff and faculty, participating in classes and programs while contributing to interdepartmental discussions aimed at enhancing communication regarding the public's role in preserving artworks.


Position Details:

  • Salary: $14.87 per hour
  • Duration: Mid-May through early November 2024
  • Benefits: Funding for regional professional development conference attendance and a one-year student membership to a relevant professional organization
  • Mentorship: Provided by the Joan P. Brock Director of Education and Assistant Deputy Director for Art and Education

Departmental Focus: 


VMFA’s Education Department is guided by the principles of Quality, Collaboration, and Community-centeredness. The AAMD Education Intern will engage in collaborative efforts within the ECE department, particularly with regard to Curiosity Camps (May-June 2024), inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. This involves honoring children as active participants in their community and recognizing the crucial role of parents and caregivers in their learning journey.


Responsibilities:

  • Collaborating with ECE staff in program administration, research, and implementation
  • Exploring communication strategies with various VMFA teams to emphasize the public's role in preserving artworks
  • Proposing educational tools and methods to the Education team

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current sophomore, junior, or senior status at an accredited college/university
  • Relevant coursework or experience in art education, early childhood education, museum studies, etc.
  • Knowledge of childhood development, studio art disciplines, and museum operations
  • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Additional Considerations:

  • Prior experience in education, studio art, or similar programs for early childhood and family audiences is advantageous
  • Familiarity with teaching methods, evaluation practices, and classroom management techniques
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check
